Alimony Archives

Alimony awards based on multiple factors

When two individuals get divorced, the court may decide to award spousal support to one spouse. The awarding of this spousal support, also known as alimony, may be based on a certain agreement by the couple, or it may be based on the court's decision. A few tips may help people navigate a divorce proceeding involving alimony, which can be complicated in Connecticut.

Choosing job over alimony may be wise

Divorce can be a difficult experience both emotionally and financially and can have long-term consequences for an individual. Some people in Connecticut may consider not accepting a job offer during the divorce process because they fear it will hurt their chances of getting alimony following the marital split-up. If possible, however, it is wise to accept the job in this situation for a couple of reasons.

One of the most difficult disputes in divorce: spousal support

The Connecticut judicial branch makes it clear on its website that it is simply giving visitors information, not legal advice. So if someone wants to try to handle a divorce on their own, they can find forms and deadlines there, but no advice on what to ask for in a property division dispute or child custody arrangement. You are on your own, the state says: “If you have questions about the use of these forms, your legal rights, or particular issues in your case, it is strongly recommended that you talk to an attorney.”
